Day 3 - A game that is under rated

Welcome back to what is shaping up to be such a nice month. I hope everyone has a wonderful Fourth of July. Is that dating myself? I am I not supposed to do that? Expect everyone to read this the day it comes out and then never again after that... Well happy what ever day it is to you sir or madam.

Today's topic is "A game that is under rated". Again I am flying by the seat of my pants, having done no preparation for this. When I think of a game that is under rated, it makes me think of something that is bad but I enjoyed regardless. Or maybe something that is good but not acknowledged by most others.

The most recent one that comes to mind is...

Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam on the Wii. In the early days of the Wii there was not much to play. I was excited at the thought of having a party system and enjoying lots of games with friends. I was just starting college, and although I had lots of friends, no one was really knocking on my door to play the Wii. In the end it wasn't much of a party system. In my subsequent journey to play all the Wii games and find one to play alone I got hooked on Downhill Jam. I didn't follow game journalism or videogame opinion as much as I do now, but Downhill Jam was not looked upon to fondly back when it came out in 2006. It got mediocre scores, ending up with a metacritic rating of 7.

I was never a huge Tony Hawk fan in my younger years. I played them with friends, but never owned them myself. Downhill Jam is still the only Tony Hawk I have ever owned. I wasn't very good at TH, they were fun, but I never got great at them. I was always schooled by the neighbor kids. Downhill Jam was the first time I felt good at a TH game. Downhill Jam remains one of my highlights of the Wii generation, even if it wasn't loved by all.

Any game you thinks deserves better praise? Share you hidden gems with us in the comments, and I'll catch you tomorrow.
Cheers!

  1. Culturally I would argue monster hunter for the US. In general people don't give enough credit to unique games. Can't remember the last time a game that wasn't a sequel or triquel got decent coverage.

    1. Isn't Monster Hunter a game that has a done of remakes and sequels?
